Our commitment to

Anti-Racism.

First Light Sangha acknowledges the need to understand the dynamics of race, power and privilege within ourselves, our Sangha and the broader Plum Village practice community. In 2020, we made a collective commitment to engage in white-awareness work as a Sangha. We align with and support the ARISE (Awakening through Race, Intersectionality and Social Equity) Sangha to advance greater inclusivity, healing and transformation in our community.

Aware of our interconnection, First Light Sangha acknowledges the need for racial and ethnic reconciliation and social change in order to foster healing, facilitate belonging and build true community. Together as a Sangha, we are committed to enhancing our racial awareness, connecting to our histories and utilizing this shared space to support reconciliation, social change, healing and true awakening.

We are called forward.

In addition to the Five Mindfulness Trainings, First Light Sangha regularly recites and engages in Dharma discussion on the Contemplations on the Five Mindfulness Trainings, A New Paradigm For Racial Justice and the Global Pandemic written by Marisela Gomez and Valerie Brown.

Currently, we are reading together America’s Racial Karma: An Invitation to Heal by Dharma teacher Dr. Larry Ward.

We understand that this racial awareness is a process that requires ongoing commitment, engagement and action. We know we are each on our own path towards awareness and healing. Our shared practice of Engaged Buddhism supports us on this journey.

Dr. Larry Ward, author America’s Racial Karma. Dr Ward is a senior teacher in Buddhist Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's Plum Village tradition.
